Biographical Information: Tom was born in June 1903 in Stocksbridge, Sheffield, Yorkshire. He was the youngest son of eleven children born to John and Sarah Hanwell.
Tom was patriotic and during the First World War, wanted to due his part for King and Country. He was slightly too young to join however, so he borrowed his brother Jack's birth certificate. This false birthdate (21 March 1901) was entered into his service record. He went on to servin various ships to include H.M.S. Windsor, H.M.S. Curacoa, H.M.S. Alresford and H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth. He joined his final ship, Hood circa 1936.
Tom served throughout the war and into the late 1930s. He was due to retire when World War Two commenced. Sometime during his career, he met and married his wife Elsie, a French woman. They had no children. They are known to have lived in Malta and later in London. Elsie had relocated to Manchester Road, Old Haywoods, Deepcar, Sheffield to be with Tom's family after the start of the War. Elsie relocated to London after Tom's death and she never remarried.
Tom was 37 years old at the time of his loss. We have no additional information.
