H.M.S. Hood Rolls of Honour
Chatham Naval Memorial
Updated 30-Nov-2008
This listing contains basic information and photos of the Royal Navy Memorial at Chatham, Kent, United Kingdom. Seven members of H.M.S. Hood's final crew were Chatham-based men. The information and photos contained herein were provided by Frank Daniels.
Background
This memorial commemorates the more than 18,500 sailors assigned to Chatham who died during the First and Second World Wars. There are 7 H.M.S. Hood crewmen listed here.
Location/Directions
The memorial is located on a hill which overlooks the town of Chatham. It is at the end of King's Bastion Road. We've been advised that it can be a bit tricky to find. Frank Daniels has provided the following driving directions:
Driving north through the centre of Chatham, follow the brown signs for the historic dockyard. At the top of a long incline there is a roundabout (the historic dockyard is signed as the first exit at this roundabout). Take the 2nd exit instead (signed Brompton) onto Wood Street. A short distance along this dual carriageway you'll pass a Toyota dealership to the right. Take the first right turn beyond the dealership onto Mansion Row. Next, take the first left into Sally Port Gardens. Take a right turn when you see a post office letter box on the right, onto a road called Kings Bastion, and keep bearing right along this winding road through a housing estate. Keep straight on, passing the entrance to Brompton-Westbrook Primary School on the left, and just beyond that point you will reach the memorial, where there is some car-parking space. The memorial only comes into view after you have passed the school entrance because the narrow road is lined with high trees on both sides.
Location of Hood Panels/Names
The Hood names are located on the "1941" section, Panels 49 & 50.
