Date Joined Hood: November 1940
Biographical Information: "Jack", as he was known to family and friends, was born on 31 March 1917 in Hull, Yorkshire. He was the youngest of three children born to Benjamin and Eva Brown. His siblings were Ernest and May.

The family lived at 21 Waverly Terrace, Villa-Place, Hessleroad, Hull.

Jack was educated at Osborne Street school. As a young man he was also a member of the Navy League Cadets. He joined the Navy less than a year after completing school.

He is known to have served for three years aboard H.M.S. Cornwall in the far east, followed by H.M.S. Exmouth during the Spanish Civil War. He also served in H.M.S. Berwick and H.M.S. Worcester. He distinguished himself aboard Worcester during the evacuation at Dunkirk and was Mentioned in Despatches. He was transferred to his final ship, Hood, in November 1940.
