Updated 06-May-2014

On 26 May 2013, our close friends of the Battle Cruiser H.M.S. Hood South East London Memorial Group held their annual parade in Lewisham (London) to honour the fallen men of H.M.S. Hood. We are grateful to Duncan MacDonald-Heaney for providing the following information and photos. As always, we are most grateful to Duncan and the members of the group for all the hard work that went into making the event a great success.

The parade proceedsThe "Battle Cruiser H.M.S. Hood South East London Memorial Group" held its annual parade and memorial service on Sunday, 26 May 2013. The parade assembled at the grounds of the Catford and Bromley Synagogue then commenced at 1300hrs. The Herne Bay Sea Cadet band led the way. The parade consisted of several units from the Southeast London Sea Cadet Corps along with a contingent from Royal Marine cadets, NTSC HOOD cadets plus a squad from 101 Royal Engineer Regiment (E O D and Search).

The parade proceeded down Crantock Road and turned into Bromley Road. The parade then proceeded along Bromley Road and finally turned right into Allerford Road. The standards and band moved into the Memorial Gardens where the service was subsequently held. The service was conducted by Reverend Canon Michael Hart.

The following VIPs were in attendance: Councillor Pauline Morrison (representing the Mayor of Lewisham), Councillor Angela Cornforth Mayor of Greenwich, Councillor Ian Wingfield of the Southwark Council, Cmdr Chris Hardinge, RNR and Lt Cmdr David Lewis, RNR. As many as 200 military personnel and civilians were in attendance.

Following the service the group moved into the Bellingham Ex-Servicemens Club's clubhouse where resident singer Gracie Lynn entertained everyone for the afternoon. There was also a show to help collect money for Help for Heroes. The club supplied food and made drinks available to all. More information and photos can be found here.

As always, we of the H.M.S. Hood Association appreciate the excellent work carried out by our shipmates of the Battlecruiser HMS HOOD South East London Memorial Group. We look forward to continuing our close relationship and wish them continued success.

Next year's event is scheduled for Sunday, 25 May 2014. Please monitor their Facebook page for more information.
