Memorial Re-dedication & Parade, Lewisham, May 2008
Updated 06-May-2014

On 26 May 2008, a parade in honour of the lost men of H.M.S. Hood took place in Lewisham (London). Many thanks to Duncan MacDonald-Heaney for the information and photos contained herein. We also thank Duncan, Tony Green and all others who have worked hard to make the Lewisham memorial and events such a success.

The Lewisham Hood MemorialAt least 30 of Hood's final crew were known to be from the London area. A number of these were from the southern part of the city- areas such as Honor Oak, Lewisham and so forth. These men were memorialised locally by Ray Raymont in the years following the war. After many years however, the memorial had deteriorated and was in rough shape. Fortunately, Tony Green and Duncan MacDonald-Heaney took action. Due to their research and hard work, the memorial was carefully restored.

Tony and Duncan felt that a restoration was not enough- the memorial needed to be re-dedicated. So, in they organised a parade and re-dedication ceremony that was held at the Bellingham Ex-Servicemen's Club in May 2007. It was, by all accounts, a great success- so much so that plans were made to make it an annual event. To facilitate this, they also created the "Battle Cruiser H.M.S. Hood South East London Memorial Group".

Pipers The Group held this year's parade on 26 May 2008. It was led by three pipers and was attended by the Mayor Of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock. The parade proceeded along Bromley Road  and then onto Allerford Road where the Mayor and other dignitaries took the salute. Attendance was high and the event was once again a great success.

The "Battlecruiser HMS HOOD South East London Memorial Group" have pledged to continue to hold this parade every May. We wish them all the best and want them to know that their efforts are sincerely appreciated by the veterans of Hood and our Association. We hope that veterans can attend one or more of the future parades when they do not take place on the same days as our own local parade in Portsmouth.
